Recent Reads and Ramblings.
------------------- Originally i was going to write about several books i had recently read, summarize, and rate them. It then occurred to me that you could find all this shenanigans a million other places on the net, and i realized that to set The Bookworm Chronicles apart, i would have to do what i love best... ramble! Truly though, when a book affects me deeply, i have so many ideas and thoughts about it that my cup-eth totally flow-eth over. So here it is ladies and gents, right here for your wish fulfillment entertainment... the BRAIN OF THE BOOKWORM! --------------------
THE FOLD BY AN NA.
- This book made me think.( Which i am quite a fan of. You know, the whole thinking hobby ) It introduced me to a new world in a way. I say "in a way", because though parts of it were foreign to me, some parts were as familiar as the weenus skin i grab when I'm deep into a book. It opened up this whole world of the Korean community; the ideals they have and how their stereotyped constantly. The pressure they feel to conform with western standards of beauty is immense. Although this land is foreign to me, the idea of beauty is not. I recently stopped wearing make-up because i wanted to feel beautiful and open to the world without any layer of protection over top. ( Also it was hell to get ready in the morning ) On the other had, i recently put blue streaks in my hair. The main character of the book, Joyce, was offered a surgery that would give her the western/European "fold" in the eyelids and make her eyes appear less slanted. She also had a friend who needed serious medication to rid his nightmarish acne.
So isn't it all relative?
What's the difference between enhancing your eyes with some eyeliner and enhancing your chest with some implants? Why do we need these things to feel confident? For you guys out there, it's as simple as putting on a cologne. If it's ( as they all tell us ) what's on the inside that really counts, why should it matter if you smell like Tim Urban or Justin Timberlake ? Why should it matter what clothes you wear? Why should you wear clothes at all in the summer, or on a nice day like today? ( I'm personally hypothetically quite an avid nudist. I'd love to try it out one day. ) What exactly is the difference between covering up a zit, shaving our armpits, and getting plastic surgery? Is the latter any more extreme merely because it's permanent? I'm not a guru. I'm not Obi Wan Kinobi. I really don't know. But i will continue to ask myself important questions and i urge all of you to do so as well. This book questions our pre-determined notions of what beautiful is, and portrays the way we value looks so heavily as a society. YAY!
Hey. I am Julia.
I love to learn.
If I'm lucky, I'll get to live long. I really hope that when I'm at the end, I'm satisfied with my time on earth. I want to really live.
Also, I want to become fluent in at least one other language, because I feel lonely only knowing one. Some nights i feel lonely thinking that there might be no other life besides what's on earth!
I love cheese. That's been pretty constant for me. I love mashed potatoes.
I had a mashed potato epiphany when I was younger. It's funny, my mom actually remembers it. I was totally dissing mashed potatoes, and then one day I tried them. Apparently my reaction was something along the lines of "Oh......Yum!"
Ever since then I've been hooked.
I also still think the T.V. show "Bachelor/Bachelorette" has got to be the most ridiculous thing on the planet. I'm embarrassed for you, T.V.
